  • Bag Lady: A Goddess Figurine

    By Pirjo Polari-Khan

The shape of this piece is based on the form of a goddess figurine from the Cycladic period. Cyclades are a small group of Greek islands in southern Aegean Ocean. Leafing through the books about ancient goddesses I wonder about the significance of their shape, pose and the accessories they carry. If this piece was found thousand years from now, people might think that women were obsessed about hang bags then. And they would be right!

Venus series: The fore-mother for my Venus series is the Venus of Willendorf, also know the Woman of Willendorf. This 4.3 “ high (11cm) figurine was found 1908 by archaeologist Josef Szombathy at a paleolithic site near Willendorf, a village in Lower Austria near the city of Krems. It is estimated to be made between 24,000 and 22,000 BCE. The figurine is carved from a type of lime stone that isn’t found at the local area and tinted with red ochre.

  • Dawn in Paradice

    Dawn in Paradise:

Dawn in Paradise is a spray painting, I call “Sprainting”, on canvas, iridescent finish.

Moving to California (that has 300 sunny days) from the midst of harsh, dark Finnish winter was like entering the paradise. Opening the back yard patio door to a beautiful summer morning with the sun rays from the cloudless sky streaming through the foliage of exotic plants, dew glimmering on the grass, nightingale showing off its repertoire still, after 30 years, makes me feel that way.

  • Desert Island

    Desert Island:

Who Would You Like to Take to a Deserted Island With You? The thought, as old as time when eyes of two strangers meet the first time in a crowded room: I would like to take her/him to a deserted island with me.

  • Engulfed Cathedral

    Engulfed Cathedral:

Engulfed Cathedral is a spray painting, I call Sprainting, on canvas, iridescent finish.

As a child one of my favorite stories was the H C Andersen Little Mermaid. In the bottom of the ocean there was a cathedral, fish swimming in and through its amber windows. Listening to Claude Debysse Engulfed Cathedral I could still hear the bells ringing through the waves and revisit the enchanted playground of little Mermaid and her sisters.

  • Evolution

The Story: This shadow box with it’s labeled specimens could be found at a museum of the future. It depicts how women’s bodies have been shaped at the whim of the fashion over the millennials. Should the prevailing trend of big boobs continue, sooner or later there will be a big bang leaving us wondering what is next. Don’t forget to quote me if/when one day you can buy a boob-kit from a pharmacy and DIY like you would color your own hair.

  • Fence

    Fence:

I’ve seen fences that have pieces of broken glasses embedded in them to keep intruders out. A person who has experienced hardship in his/her life builds a fence with shards to keep safe but inside they are still vulnerable and shattered.

I have a habit of observing people in public places. Like closed books they hide their life stories within themselves. Outside giving only limited previews I can only guess what these people would be like if I knew them.

  • Genesis

The inspiration for Genesis came from Finland national epic Kalevala

It explains the birth of the world; In the beginning there was a maiden sitting in an ocean. A large bird flew by and laid an egg on her knee. From the warmth of her body the egg hatched and cracked in two pieces; the top became the sky and the bottom the earth.

  • Halo

    Halo:

In the Bible there is a chapter that talks about people who are gilded on the outside but their inside is like a cemetery, full of skeletons and bones. We all know hypocrites who appear to be good and genuine on the outside but go against that image on the inside.
